FIGURE IN THE DOORWAY Size: 57 x 49 cm (including frame) Oil on board A mid-century painting that presents a quiet yet enigmatic interior scene, painted in oil onto board and dated 1954. At the center, a wooden chair is angled toward the viewer, its form simplified but solid, resting on a textured floor. Beyond, in the doorway, stands the faint silhouette of a lone figure in a long garment, their presence blurred and shadowed, suggesting mystery or distance. Executed in a modernist style, the work combines both figurative and abstract qualities. The composition is pared back, relying on the strong geometry of the chair, doorway, and vertical planes of colour to structure the space. The moody palette is rich and earthy, with deep browns, warm ochres, and muted greens offset by dark shadowed passages that intensify the mood. The brushstrokes are bold and expressive, applied with visible texture and energy. Textured areas contrast with more thinly brushed passages, creating a play between solidity and suggestion.
