About the Item

This delicate 19th-century drawing presents a quiet panoramic view of Alicante, rendered with restraint and atmospheric subtlety. Executed in fine pencil or graphite on toned paper, the composition stretches horizontally, emphasizing the breadth of the coastline and the calm expanse of water in the foreground. To the left rises the distinctive mass of Mount Benacantil, crowned by the fortress of Santa Bárbara, which overlooks the town below. The artist has lightly indicated the clustered buildings at the base of the hill, suggesting the harbor and waterfront through faint linear detail rather than dense shading. The mountain recedes softly into the surrounding landscape, its contours gently defined against a pale sky. In the center-right foreground, a small sailing vessel sits on still water, its triangular lateen sails raised and reflected faintly on the surface. The boat provides a strong vertical accent within the otherwise low, horizontal composition. Its darker tonal treatment contrasts with the lighter, almost ethereal rendering of the distant shoreline and hills. The overall effect is one of calm and luminosity. The minimal use of line and shading creates a sense of atmospheric distance, typical of 19th-century topographical sketches made either as travel studies or as preparatory works. The inscription “Alicante” at the lower left confirms the location, reinforcing the drawing’s documentary character while preserving a poetic sense of Mediterranean stillness.
