Outstanding Quality Spanish School Early 20th Century (circa 1905–1915) Figures at a Public Gathering, Northern Spain Oil on paper, laid down Not Signed Possibly Basque or Catalan region In the manner of Paris-trained Spanish painters influenced by French Impressionism ⸻ A lively and expressive early 20th-century Spanish oil sketch depicting figures gathered beneath trees at what appears to be a public or civic occasion, likely in northern Spain. The composition is animated by small groups of figures engaged in conversation and observation, their forms suggested with confident, economical brushstrokes rather than detailed modelling. The handling reflects the influence of French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist sketch practice, absorbed by many Spanish painters who trained or worked in Paris during the period. Executed rapidly on paper, the work has the immediacy and spontaneity of an étude sur le motif, capturing atmosphere, movement, and social rhythm rather than formal finish. The palette is restrained and harmonious, favouring warm earth tones, muted greens, and soft greys. Particularly notable are the figures to the right, whose dress and stance suggest regional northern Spanish or Basque costume, reinforcing the painting’s Iberian character despite its French-influenced technique. This combination of Spanish subject matter and Parisian handling is characteristic of artists working between Catalonia, the Basque border region, and France in the years before the First World War. While not attributable to a specific named artist with certainty, the painting sits comfortably within the circle of Paris-trained Spanish painters influenced by artists such as Eliseu Meifrèn, and contemporaries working in a similar Franco-Spanish milieu.
