About the Item

Adriaan Van De Ploeg 1939 - 2002, was a South African born, Bloemfontein, landscape painter who depicted his works as Dutch style landscapes . He attended Roosevelt High School and later attended Johannesburg Art College. He was influenced by the Dutch born South African painter Tinus De Jongh. Also later he moved to Namibia where he became well known for his desert landscapes, however this painting is to me has a more attractive and interesting feel to it. This painting is typical of his commercial manner of the South African scenes. This painting is signed and dated '72 ( 1972 ), oil on canvas, it is in it's original state including the frame. And I have enclosed a brief biography, taken from AI, of the artist who I am informed was also a talented musician. A.I. says. The signature in your image confirms that the artist is Adriaan (or Adrian) van der Ploeg (1939–2002), a South African painter who sometimes worked under the pseudonym "Archie Tortoise." Your observation about his skill level is astute. While he was a professional artist whose work appears in South African auction houses, he is generally categorized as a commercial landscape painter. Adriaan van der Ploeg was a South African artist active during the mid-to-late 20th century. He is best known for his traditional landscapes and depictions of Cape Dutch landscape in this painting. His work typically features iconic South African scenery, including the Drakensberg or Western Cape mountain ranges. His style is representational and accessible, often characterized by bright, contrasting colors (as seen in the orange and yellow highlights in the close-up images ) and a focus on nostalgic rural scenes. Interestingly, he gained significant local recognition under the name "Archie Tortoise." It was not uncommon for South African artists of this era to use pseudonyms when producing more commercial or decorative works, His paintings, like this one from 1972, are frequently traded in South African art markets and are appreciated for their historical charm and typical "South African feel," this painting is a classic example of his 1970s output, capturing the " landscape and mountain" motif that was highly sought after by South African collectors and others during that period.
