About the Item

$2,500 per individual panel — or $29,000 for the entire installation Alessandra Rehder approaches the photographic image as a site of both rupture and restoration. Working with large-format photographs of endangered natural environments, she physically intervenes in the image itself, cutting, pinning, and layering the surface to fragment and reconstruct the landscapes she captures. By cutting and reattaching elements of the photographed terrain, Rehder stages both the destruction of ecological fragmentation and the imaginative act of repair. She recognizes that human intervention has historically wrought destruction, while affirming that the same capacity, directed toward positive ends, offers real possibility for repair and renewal. Alessandra Rehder was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1989, and graduated in photography from the SPEOS Institute in Paris in 2011. Her compositions go beyond mere documentation, coming to life through her installations. Her artistic mission has carried her practice well beyond the studio and into visual research across small, underdeveloped communities in various countries. In 2021, she founded the Espaço Ecológico Cultural (EEC), a grassroots initiative in the coastal village of Murrebue, Mozambique, offering workshops in composting, permaculture, and agroforestry aimed at nutritional reeducation and local economic development. She has exhibited across Brazil and the United States, including a solo show at the Lasar Segall Museum in São Paulo.
