About the Item

Original oil paint on canvas board of Washington Square Park during a snowfall in New York City by the American artist Bela deTirefort. Signed lower left by the artist and dated 1957. The painting condition is excellent. The artwork is housed in a custom gold handmade Motyka frame. Overall framed measurements are 16.5 by 19.5 inches. Provenance: A Brooklyn, New York estate. Washington Square Park is a 9.75-acre public park in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, New York City. It is an icon as well as a meeting place and center for cultural activity. The park is operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The park is an open space, dominated by the Washington Square Arch at the northern gateway to the park, with a tradition of celebrating nonconformity. Bela deTirefort (American 1894-1993) Bela de Tirefort was born in Eastern Europe, painted in New York City, and retired to St. Petersburg, Florida. Known for his striking New York scenes, de Tirefort left an enduring record of the metropolis between the 1930s and ’50s. Using muted tones, strong silhouettes, and incisive textures, his paintings capture the structure of the city in the decades between the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the growth of the New York art scene. He often depicted the areas surrounding the Flatiron Building, Broadway, and the New York Harbor and sold many of his paintings directly from Washington Square. His name is occasionally mislabeled as “D.E. Tirefort” in art records, books, and websites.
