About the Item

This is an original canvas painting by Philadelphia-area artist and professor of art at Lehigh University. It is framed in a narrow, contemporary white wood frame. All hanging hardware is included, and it is ready to install. Signed on the back. The title "Earthshine" refers to a phenomenon where the dark side of the moon is faintly illuminated by sunlight reflected off the Earth. This reflected light can make the entire lunar disk visible, even when the Moon is a thin crescent. It's most easily seen a few days before and after a new moon. This painting is part of Murphy's "Gradients of Growth" series, which investigates tree cavity nesting birds such as owls, woodpeckers and flickers. The paintings pose the question, what do birds see in our anthropocene climate. The abstract portal shapes are derived from the nest cavity shapes found in trees while walking in the woods of Rolling Hill Park during a residency at Lower Merion Conservancy. The focus of Murphy's studio practice is grounded in the ecology of hope rather than the grieving of extinction and the belief that through awareness we can work to heal and repair our warming earth. This exhibition was made possible by generous funding from Lehigh University’s CORE grant. Murphy has exhibited internationally and extensively in the United States in museums, galleries and institutions including Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Delaware, Minnesota, Washington and Oregon. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Philadelphia International Airport, Palm Springs Museum of Art, Biggs Museum of American Art, New Bedford Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. The recipient of numerous awards and grants, most notably a Percent for the Arts sculpture commission (Dublin, CA) the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts Fellowship and a Leeway Foundation award, she has been an artist-in-residence at Winterthur Museum (DE), Lacawac Field Station (PA), Powdermill Nature Reserve (PA), Hawk Mountain Sanctuary (PA), Vermont Studio Center (VT) and Pouch Cove Artist Residency (St. Johns, Newfoundland). Her work has been published in Symbiosis, New American Paintings and Fresh Paint Magazine. Murphy’s work can be found in various public and private collections including Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center Museum, Temple University, AlphaMed Press and Gamblin Artists Colors. Deirdre Murphy earned her MFA degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her BFA degree from the Kansas City Art Institute. Murphy is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Lehigh University and taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Murphy has been a visiting artist at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania College of Design and University of Texas, Philadelphia University, Kent State University & Dickinson College. Deirdre Murphy is represented by the Gross McCleaf Gallery (Philadelphia), Boxheart Gallery (Pittsburgh) and Zinc Contemporary Gallery (Seattle).

Edges are neatly finished and painted black, so there is no need for additional framing. Every purchase comes with a free, hardcover copy of the beautiful illustrated new book, "Joseph McAleer: Sixty Years." "Joe McAleer's paintings engage us as participants in a complex perceptual game. Comprised of contrasting patterns of color, texture, and form, which fill the canvas from edge to edge, his restless abstractions elude a fleeting encounter. Rather, they absorb our attention with rhythmic structures and visual anomalies designed to stimulate and perplex our senses. McAleer's kaleidoscopic abstractions have their basis in the humble Modernist's grid,......" - Joe Houston, Author "Optic Nerve, Perceptual Art of the 1960s"; Curator, Hallmark Art Collection.
