About the Item

Born in Paris, Edouard Cabane studied under Adolphe William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. His painting Le Serment de Brutus earned second prize in Rome in 1884. He exhibited frequently at the Salon des Artistes Français starting in 1888 and won numerous accolades there, including a third class prize in 1903 and a second class prize in 1907. Cabane was known for his portraits "dans l'esprit des Vénitiens" — in a style evoking the mannerism, dignity and sensuality of 16th century Venetian figurative works. He also painted religious imagery; the St. Vincent Church in Salies-de-Béarn has four large Cabane panels, and the Cathedral of La Rochelle commissioned him to paint several crucifixion scenes. Circa 1906, Cabane began to take a more impressionistic approach, and his works from this period have a looseness and haziness to them. Note the blurred edges of the tree line in French Countryside. Cabane paintings are found in the collections of the Reims Museum of Fine Arts and the Musée des Beaux-Arts Bordeaux. The painting itself measures 5 1/2" x 9 1/2". Artist's signature is lower left.
