REGINALD FRAMPTON" (lower right) Oil on canvas This enchanting and entrancing seascape is the indelible work of English Symbolist and Pre-Raphaelite Edward Reginald Frampton. Capturing the beauty of the small Channel Island of Sark, this painting clearly expresses Frampton's love for the sea and betrays the expert use of color that he gained as a stained-glass artist. Sark is a particularly beautiful example of the landscapes that Frampton painted late in his career. The striking color and forms, from the wide expanse of blue water to the patch of wildflowers in the foreground, are hallmarks of Frampton's exquisite canvases. Frampton was a keen sailor, and Sark is one of many paintings in which he expressed his love of the sea. He travelled widely in search of suitable views, finding them in Sussex, Cumberland, the Channel Islands, Brittany, and the Bernese Oberland. Though based on actual scenery, the landscapes are treated in the formalized style that he had adopted for his figure compositions, a style heavily influenced by Sir Edward Burne-Jones and his own early practice as an artist in stained glass. Exhibited at the Royal Academy of 1922, a year before Frampton's death, this work is replete with symbolism, the spring flowers in the foreground of this picture being a sign of spiritual rebirth. Born in 1870 or 1872, Frampton was the son of Edward Frampton (1850-1929), a preeminent stained glass master. He worked in this medium, almost certainly trained by his father, as well as in murals, which became his speciality. Through this media, he developed a schematic style, which he owed to a number of influences, from the Italian 'primitives,' Puvis de Chavannes and Burne-Jones, the Pre-Raphaelite whose retrospective exhibition at the New Gallery in 1892 struck him 'with the force of a revelation', to the French Symbolists. Indeed, Burne-Jones' particular influence can be seen in Frampton's many religious paintings. Later, he was moved more by the early Flemish masters, while responding, like Gauguin and his followers a generation earlier, to the artistic traditions and deeply religious character of Brittany.
