A good antique oil painting on panel by "The Oregon Artist" Eliza Rosanna Barchus (1857-1959), "Mount Hood at Sunset", circa 1900. The painting depicting a view of Mt. Hood at sunset, with Trillium Lake to the foreground lined with trees, the evening pink sky with a few scattered clouds, the painting is signed lower right "Barchus". The painting is housed in the original gilded frame, to the verso is a label for "Sanborn Vail & Co", a company selling artist's supplies & providing pricture framing in Portland, San Francisco & Los Angeles, they went out of business in 1926. Eliza was a prolific artist and sometimes the quality of her work suffered from a production line style of painting, this is certainly one of her better works, the mountain, water & trees are painted with care & truly demonstrate her prodigious ability. The painting is in excellent condition and the frame is in very good condition also, this charming painting is ready to grace your wall. Painting at sight without the frame 12" x 10" Biography In 1880 Eliza Barchus & her husband came to Portland from Utah. She took lessons from William Parrott in 1884 by observing him paint, and began her artistic career in 1885. Her first sale was a work entitled Mt. Rainier, bought by someone who paid $1 and promptly re-titled it Mt. Tacoma (the mountain's original name). Early awards from the Portland Mechanics Fairs encouraged her to continue her painting in earnest. In 1899 she became a widow with a family to support, and soon learned how to market the romantic scenes that she remembered or imagined. Her landscapes, particularly her mountain views of Hood, Rainier, and Shasta, spread the beauty of the West to the rest of the country and even to the world. In 1890 her Mt. Hood was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York. The work impressed viewers not only because of its subject but because of the gender of its painter, a rarity for the time. In the early years she worked at home, then moved to a studio at Third and Yamhill. She eventually moved to Fifth and Yamhill, now the Corbett Building. In 1905 she was awarded a gold medal for her painting at the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition; it was also here that her entrepreneurial skills surfaced. She introduced color postcards to Portland, featuring six scenes, which continue to be popular with collectors. She also produced a catalogue offering 8x10 paintings "nicely framed for 75 cents," receiving orders from across the country. Financial pressure forced her to produce thousands of works. Although she received criticism for her assembly-line style, she displayed considerable ability. Her larger works revealed a talent that was lacking in some of her smaller paintings. Her style was very realistic. Her favorite story was that of a friend's released canary, which hopefully batted its wings against the water pictured in one of her paintings. During her most prolific period, from the late 1880's to about 1920, she sold many works through the B. B. Rich cigar and tobacco concession at the Portland Hotel. In 1935 failing eyesight and arthritis combined to bring her painting career to an end; she died twenty-four years later in 1959 at the age of 102. In 1957, on her one hundredth birthday, she was the subject of nostalgic newspaper articles and interviews, including one in "My Day," the nationally syndicated column by Eleanor Roosevelt. Fifteen years later, largely through the efforts of her daughter Agnes, the Oregon Legislature named Eliza Barchus "The Oregon Artist." Agnes also wrote a biography of her mother, Eliza R. Barchus: The Oregon Artist, published by Binford & Mort in 1974. Even today, Barchus continues to grow in popularity and her work is very collectible. Antique American watercolor painting, landscape harvest farm scene by Frank F. English (1854 - 1922), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Circa 1900. A very attractive painting by the celebrated Pennsylvania artist Frank F. English, the location is in Point Pleasant, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The painting depicts a scene of blue skies with two farmers tossing hay with pitchforks & two horses harnessed to a hay wagon, with barns to the background. The painting signed lower right " Frank F. English", condition is excellent this very charming painting is ready to hang on your wall. Biography Frank F. English was born in Louisville Kentucky in 1854. In the early 1880s, he studied for five years in the evening classes of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His instructors included Thomas Eakins, James P. Kelly and Thomas Anshutz. However, English's reputation primarily rests with his outstanding facility as a watercolorist; most of his known paintings are executed in this medium. English's propensity for its use coincides, appropriately enough, with the watercolor's growing popularity among other American painters. The American Water Color Society brought the medium special prominence by the late 1860s, and acceptance on the level of oil painting in 1876. That same year, the society was invited to display its works at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Its members exhibited 116 watercolors, and their public exposure was enormous. It is safe to assume that during the 159-day Centennial, Frank English was among the nearly 10 million exposition attendees, surpassing attendance records at all preceding world's fairs.
