About the Item

Venice, Doge's Palace and the Piazzetta by Bouvard (Éloi-Noël Béraud, French, 1875–1957) is an original oil on canvas dating to circa 1920. Painted under the artist's most celebrated pseudonym, the work captures one of Venice's most iconic views, with the Doge's Palace, the Piazzetta, gondolas, and the shimmering waters of the Venetian Lagoon illuminated by warm afternoon light. Known for his refined Venetian cityscapes, Bouvard developed an instantly recognizable style that combines luminous color, atmospheric light, and meticulous architectural detail. His paintings celebrate the timeless elegance of Venice, balancing carefully observed landmarks with softly reflected waterways to create compositions of remarkable depth and serenity. This work exemplifies the qualities that have made his Venetian scenes enduringly sought after by collectors. Born Éloi-Noël Isidore Béraud in Saint-Étienne, France, the artist studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he developed exceptional technical skill through the study of the Old Masters. Working under several pseudonyms—including Bouvard and Marc-Aldine—he gained international recognition for his views of Venice, Paris, and other European cities. Today, his paintings remain among the most collectible examples of early twentieth-century French cityscape painting. Signed lower right "Bouvard." Canvas: 21.25 × 28.75 inches (54 × 73 cm). Framed: 30 × 37 inches (76.2 × 94 cm). Ready to hang.
