About the Item

Author: Francisco Salès (Barcelona, 1904 – Paris, 1976) Title: Houses in the Twilight Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 50 x 73 cm (19.7 x 28.7 in) Dimensions with frame: 58 x 81 cm (22.8 x 31.9 in) Signature: Signed “Salès” in the lower right corner Period: c. 1950–1970 Frame: White distressed wooden molding Condition: The canvas is in good overall condition, with the paint layer intact and without losses. It shows a stable superficial craquelure consistent with the age of the work, with no risk of detachment. The current varnish has a glossy finish that enhances the colors, although it cannot be confirmed whether it is the original workshop varnish. The frame shows minor scuffs and wear consistent with age, without compromising its stability or function. DESCRIPTION A soberly executed landscape with a restrained atmosphere, where two rural buildings stand out against a gray-green sky. Francisco Salès employs a limited palette of greens, ochres, and muted reds, achieving a scene imbued with melancholy and serenity. The oil features heavy impasto and dense textures, with visible brushstrokes that add a material quality to the composition. The work reflects the influence of the School of Paris, a movement with which the artist was associated during his stay in France. The treatment of the forms, almost geometric, recalls the volumetric synthesis of modern landscape painters, while the diffuse light adds a lyrical quality that brings it closer to post-impressionist and expressionist trends. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST Francisco Salès (Barcelona, 1904 – Paris, 1976) was a Catalan painter whose career developed between Spain and France. Trained in Barcelona, he later moved to Paris, where he became part of the vibrant artistic circles of Montmartre and Montparnasse. His painting, deeply influenced by the French postwar school, combines restrained use of color with refined compositions. He exhibited in galleries in Paris and Barcelona, and his works—landscapes, still lifes, and urban scenes—are now held in private collections across Europe and America. His name is associated with a modern figurative current, a bridge between late post-impressionism and the contemporary sensibility of the mid-20th century. RELATED ARTISTS AND STYLISTIC REFERENCES Nicolas de Staël (1914–1955): for the synthesis of planes and the expressive use of muted color. Jean-Baptiste Olive and the Provençal landscapists: for rural architecture and veiled atmospheres. Bernard Buffet (1928–1999): in the chromatic austerity and economy of elements. Josep Guinovart (1927–2007): in his early figurative period, with geometric structures and earthy tones.
