About the Item

Francois Tattegrain Canvas Size: 185 x 295cm Outside Size: 220 x 330cm This painting is named and listed in Benezit It was painted for the Paris Salon in 1911 and then sold in auction in 1919 (ref Benezit). For many years it hung in the Museum of Boulogne-sur-Mer alongside pieces by Corot, Boudin and Fantin-Latour. This fantastic painting is one of Francois Tattegrain's most outstanding pieces of art. It is a wonderful collaboration of subjects where an incredible historical scene, showing the military might of Nelson and his marine bombardment of Boulogne is combined with a beautiful genre piece showing the urgency of battle within the ramparts of Boulogne. It has fantastic little nuances amongst the figurative detail like the 3 legged toy horse and the children heating the cannon balls. In 1911 this piece was exhibited in the Paris Salon Translated the title means 'Coast battery engaged, last period of the Continental Blockade' . This is with reference to Nelson's fleet that you can see in the distance. With this painting comes an engraving showing the efforts of the French navy led by Vice Admiral La Touche in placing themselves between Nelson and Boulogne during the period when Napoleon was planning his invasion of Britain and had assembled his navy in Boulogne. On the 5th and the 15th of August 1801 La Touche successfully defended Napoleon's fleet outside Boulogne inflicting arguably the two main defeats of Nelson's career. This painting was hanging in the museum of Boulogne-sur-Mer alongside pieces by Alfred Sisley, Francois Boucher, Eugene Boudin, Auguste Rodin and Henri Fantin-Latour although it is unclear when it was removed. It is quite possible that the painting hung in the museum during the period from 1911 to 1919 before it was sold in 1919 as was done in many cases at this time. The painting also comes with a framed engraving. Free delivery Francois Tattegrain Francois Tattegrain was the third son of Charles-Louis Tattegrain, (1806-1879), President of the Court of Amiens and Thérèse Marie Voillemier, (1819-1881). He was the younger brother of the artist George Tattegrain. As a young man he could only gain parental approval to paint if he agreed to study law. He therefore continued to paint whilst studying for a doctorate in law. Francois Tattegrain studied under Jules Lefebvre and Lepic and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1875 – 1914. He was declared ‘hors concours’ at the age of 31 in 1883 and was made a Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur at 37 in 1889. Tattegrain became well known for his history and maritime paintings in the tradition of the 19th century French School. He received a gold medal in 1889, the Medal of Honour at the Salon of 1899 and a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. He became president of the jury of the Salon des Artistes Francais. Tattegrain displayed a preference for dramatic, tragic subjects, including disasters which he often handled with both simplicity and emotion. His compositions often display a bold realism but are always harmonious; his candid painting and precise use of colour underline everyday dramas made striking by their large scale. His love of the sea and of the people living on the coast give his work a timeless quality. General Boichut describes his death “on 1st January 1915,”.. palette in hand, the celebrated painter Francois Tattegrain died at the age of 63, on the field of honour, while sketching the Arras belfry under fire”. His son was also killed in the conflict. The ‘Batterie de Cote Engagee’ was sold in Paris, 1919 for 5000FF
