About the Item

'Incoming Tide - triptych. Three oil on canvas paitings that each measure 30 x 30 inches are framed in black wood measuring 34 x 94 inches. Artist signed and dated verso. Gail Chase Bien creates luminous oil on linen paintings that unfold slowly, both in their making and in their viewing. Built through thin, layered applications of paint over months and sometimes years, her works are inspired by nature, especially the shifting play of light across water and land. Rooted in close observation yet moving toward abstraction, her paintings hold a quiet sense of spaciousness and contemplation. Bien’s work bridges realism and abstraction with unusual grace, offering images that feel serene, elemental, and deeply sustained. Their surfaces are rich and complex, yet their effect is one of clarity and calm, inviting viewers to spend time with them and to experience their beauty gradually. Proudly presented by Andra Norris Gallery in California.
