About the Item

A large, captivating 1950s Mid-Century Modern city street & construction scene by Pennsylvania Regionalist artist, George W. Mengelson (Born 1916). A wonderful example of Twentieth Century American Ash Can School or Social Realism. Artwork size: 24 x 30 inches, oil on canvas (framed size: 27 x 33 inches). Signed and dated "G.W. Mengelson 10-54", lower right. Provenance: Private collection, Chicago, IL. George W. Mengelson was born in Catasauqua, PA in 1916. He was an artist, poet, writer of children’s stories, film producer and an engineer. He received his engineering degree from Lehigh University in 1939. His artistic ability was largely self-taught He was employed by both Bethlehem Steel and consolidated Vultee Aircraft Company. He worked on the structure and design of aircraft. Mengelson is best known for his sketches of the Bethlehem, PA area. He exhibited widely throughout Pennsylvania. He produced four television programs on art for WJAC-TV in Johnstown, PA. The artist died in Skippack Township, PA in 1998.
