Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art; this original painting by Georges Laporte dated 1968. The work is presented offered for sale having been professionally cleaned and a new varnish coat applied in early 2016. The painting is mounted in its original 1960s wooden frame that has been refreshed and its fixtures replaced. Previously with Paul Nussbaumer of Zurich, Switzerland. The painting is signed and dated lower left. Georges Laporte was a French painter, lithographer and illustrator. He was born in Montmoartre, Paris on 17th December 1926. His father was a taxi driver. As a young man he studied international business and then worked as a customs agent. He started painting aged 20. He married Jeannine Schmitt in 1952 and later settled in Chalon Givry, where he started to paint the views in the surrounding area and to exhibit them. Paintings of this village, including many in the snow, are now all over the world! In 1958 he won the Sebastian Lapage Award from the Salon of French artists. He exhibited at the Peterson Gallery to critical acclaim and went on to win the Prize of the City of Aix- Provence. In 1960 the first of his works was produced as a print and sold from the Louvre. In the 1960s he discovered the beauty of the Brittany region and began to paint seascapes, establishing a studio in Quiberon. His style continually developed and he became commercially successful. After the death of his wife in 1979 he travelled more and his painting found new directions. He enjoyed professional acclaim in Corsica and Japan, where some 80,000 visitors flocked to an exhibition of his works in spring 1989. Georges Laporte died in Paris on 7th November 2000 at the age of 73 and his ashes were scattered at the tip of the Quiberon peninsula. Today the work of Georges Laporte is recognised nationally and internationally and his paintings can be found in the Musée National d'Art Moderne , Paris Museums of the City of Paris Roubaix Museum, Macon, Chalon-sur-Saône, Lons-le-Saunier, Lille, Brest Museum Matisse Museum in Cateau-Empain as well as institutions in Brussels, Switzerland, Sweden, USA and Scotland. This original painting shows the harbour at Veere, Holland. At the end of the harbour is the medieval guardhouse tower, along with other buildings. Within the horseshoe shaped harbour are five or six small sailing vessels, their masts empty of sails save a red pennant which flies from the top of each of the masts.. The harbour wall curves round, as if embracing the small vessels and keeping them safe. In the foreground the ground rises up, tinged with a vivid green. The palette is otherwise almost entirely of slate blues and greys, with black outlines. The overall impression is stylish though foreboding, the leaden skies threatening a storm.
