Henry Shayer (1787–1844) & Charles Shayer (1826–1914) Figures by a River in a Woodland Landscape, circa 1860 Oil on canvas Signed centre bottom ⸻ A beautifully executed mid-19th-century English landscape collaboratively painted by Henry Shayer and his son Charles Shayer, whose partnership produced some of the most charming rustic scenes of the Victorian period. Set within a wooded clearing beside a gentle river, the composition is animated by a gathering of figures—travellers resting with their horses, children seated near a makeshift encampment, and villagers conversing on a footbridge beneath the shade of mature trees. The Shayers were admired for their ability to fuse narrative warmth with idyllic rural scenery, and this painting is an exemplary demonstration of that appeal. Henry’s strength in composing atmospheric woodland settings combines seamlessly with Charles’s sensitive handling of figures and animals. Sunlight filters through the foliage, opening out into a bright expanse of distant fields where cattle graze under a fresh, expansive sky. It is suggested that Mundell was a pseudonym of John James Wilson. Mundell’s work was vigorous, bright, and attractive and compares favorably with the work of many of the better artists of his time. This is a very fine example of the artist's work. It is a rare composition for the artist as he mostly painted marines. This piece is framed in its original antique gold leaf frame
