About the Item

A wonderful cityscape oil painting of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake by American artist Henry Dietrich Gremke (1860-1939). Gremke was born in San Francisco, CA, and began art studies locally at the School of Design under Raymond Yelland. As well as being a fine painter, he was also an able photographer. After the earthquake in 1906, he did a series of paintings of the destruction. He specialized in watercolors and oils of the Sierra Nevada and highly detailed floral still lifes. He also painted murals for the stations of the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads. His work was exhibited throughout California, including at Oakland Industrial Expo, 1896; Mechanics Institute, 1897; California State Fair, 1900-02; Oakland Art Fund, 1905; Berkeley AA, 1908; Oakland Art Gallery, 1928, and at the Oakland Museum. This historical painting was painted in 1906 as the artist looked out at the surreal San Francisco landscape left by the devastation of the earthquake. Depicting the ruins of San Francisco with City Hall in the background, this painting documents a tragic moment in history. At the time, San Francisco was the gateway to the Pacific and had the busiest port on the West coast. With more than 80% of the city destroyed by the earthquake and subsequent fires, the devastation was felt worldwide and the reconstruction of the city began. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, title and date inscribed by artist on verso “Ruins of the San Francisco Earthquake & Fire, April 18, 1906,” and housed in a molded giltwood frame. Dimensions: 22.5 in H x 33.5 in W, actual; 30.5 in H x 41.5 in W x 1.5 in D, framed. Ref: 7
