About the Item

A beautiful large scale oil on canvas depicting a seascape with rolling waves, by British marine artist Henry Edwin Tozer. Excellent quality and atmospheric work depicting rough seas with the remains of a shipwreck in the foreground and masted sailing boats beyond. The work is signed and dated 1882 lower left and presented in a gold frame. Very nice original condition. Artist: Henry Edwin Tozer (British, 1838-1913) Title: Seascape Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 22 x 34 inches (56 x 86 cm) including the frame Born on 8 July 1838 in London, Henry Edwin Tozer was the father of the artist Henry Edward Spernon Tozer (1864-1955), Marianne Alice, and Eustace Arthur Tozer. By 1888 Tozer had moved to Newlyn and spent the rest of his life in the South West.. At the time of the 1891 Census, he had an address in St Just, Cornwall. Bessie Boyns was a pupil of his, and exhibited with him in St Just in 1892. He also taught his son, Henry Edward Spernon Tozer, with whom he is often mistaken. Henry Edwin signed his paintings '' H.E. Tozer '' whlist Henry Edward Spernon signed '' H.S. Tozer ''. Henry Edwin Tozer exhibited Surf and Rocks at the Mouth of the Cove at the RA in 1892. Two works by him were shown at Birmingham between 1889 and 1892.
