Isaac Ilyich Levitan's "Baths" ("Kupal'nya") is a poignant embodiment of autumnal reverie, painted with the artist's signature poetic restraint and emotional depth. A simple wooden jetty extends diagonally into the still, mirror-like expanse of a river, leading the eye toward a modest bathing hut sitting quietly on the water. The calm surface reflects the muted tones of a soft, overcast sky, while in the distance a tender fringe of autumn trees - rich in amber, ochre, and fading green - glows warmly against the pale horizon, evoking the bittersweet beauty of the season's end. Levitan's masterful command of tone and atmosphere transforms this humble riverside scene into a meditation on tranquility and nostalgia, where light, water, and solitude merge in exquisite harmony. This intimate oil stands as a quintessential example of the artist's lyrical landscape genius. Isaac Ilyich Levitan was born on August 30, 1860, in Kibarty (Augustów Governorate, Congress Poland, Russian Empire; present-day Lithuania), into a poor but educated Jewish family. In the early 1870s the family relocated to Moscow, and in September 1873 Levitan enrolled at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where his brother Avel had already studied. He worked under Alexei Savrasov (from 1874) and later Vasily Polenov. His mother died in 1875; his father died shortly thereafter, leaving the brothers destitute. The School waived his tuition and provided a stipend. In March 1877 two of his canvases were exhibited in the student section of the 5th Peredvizhniki exhibition; the works were warmly received by critics and the public, and the Council of the Moscow School awarded him a minor silver medal and 220 roubles to continue his studies. In 1880 Pavel Tretyakov purchased his Autumn Day, Sokolniki. In 1879 and again in 1892, anti-Jewish decrees forced Levitan out of Moscow. Together with Korovin, in 1885–86 he painted stage sets for Savva Mamontov's Private Russian Opera. He participated in Peredvizhniki exhibitions from 1884 and became a full member in 1891. He graduated without a first-class diploma — the council denied him the rank of classed artist. Close friends with Anton Chekhov, Levitan spent his final year at Chekhov's home in Crimea. In 1897 he was elected to the Imperial Academy of Arts; in 1898 appointed head of the Landscape Studio at his alma mater. He died in Moscow on August 4, 1900, of heart disease, and was buried at Dorogomilovo Jewish Cemetery. His work is held primarily at the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum.
