About the Item

Oil on mahogany panel. Signed Cossetti and dated 1913 Painting size: 18 x 15" (46 x 38cm) Framed size: 25 x 22" (64 x 56cm) We believe that Cossetti is a pseudonym for Jean-Francois Raffaeli. He was an artist famous for utilizing muted, dusty ochree and grey tones to paint working-class street figures standing outside storefronts. The artist handles light with brilliant cinematic contrast. The dazzling, sun-baked stone walls on the left perfectly balance the cool, whispering shadows of the sweeping tree canopy on the right. The tactile, thick brushstrokes—true 1913 impasto—bring the bustling market figures and cobblestones to life in a way no flat digital print or reproduction ever could.
