About the Item

John Ferneley Jnr (1815-1862) Lord Bentinck, on his grey hunter Signed with initials lower right Oil on panel Painting size 10 x 12 in Framed size 12 x 14 in Provenance The Collection of David Fuller. John E. Ferneley Junior (1815–1862) was the eldest son of the celebrated sporting painter John Ferneley Senior and continued the distinguished family tradition of equestrian and sporting art. Trained under his father in Melton Mowbray, he developed a style closely aligned with that of the elder Ferneley, producing finely observed portraits of horses, hunting scenes and rural landscapes that appealed to the sporting patrons of Victorian England. Although inevitably overshadowed by his father's considerable reputation, Ferneley Junior established a successful career in his own right, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and other leading institutions. His work is characterised by careful draughtsmanship, a keen understanding of equine anatomy and an ability to capture both the character of his subjects and the atmosphere of the English countryside. Today his paintings are appreciated for their faithful depiction of nineteenth-century sporting life and continue to be sought after by collectors of British sporting art.
