About the Item

A wonderful Vermont painting by Lucien B. Day. Likely painted near his home in Craftsbury VT, The Way of the Brook captures a babbling brook in the dense forest in such a way that you are transported there. 20" x 15.75" oil on board, 28.25" x 20" framed. Lucien Day (1916–2008) was a visionary American painter who championed figurative realism during the height of Abstract Expressionism. Dividing his career between the rural landscape of Craftsbury, Vermont, and the urban architecture of New York City, Day achieved critical acclaim for his innovative exploration of human sight and spatial perspective. Day’s early career focused on expressive, emotional landscapes of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. However, his mature style evolved into a rigorous, analytical examination of perspective. Fascinated by how the human eye perceives space, he abandoned traditional flat horizons. Instead, Day created dynamic, curved compositions that mirrored peripheral vision and the natural distortion of looking at massive structures. To further this exploration, he pioneered the use of custom, hand-crafted three-dimensional box frames and curved wooden panels. These physical structures transformed his paintings into sculptural objects, forcing viewers to interact with the artwork from multiple angles. His technical achievements were matched by his monumental impact on the mid-century art community. In 1968, Day founded the Green Mountain Gallery in Greenwich Village, which later moved to SoHo as one of the neighborhood's pioneering art spaces. Under his leadership, the gallery became a vital sanctuary and exhibition forum for contemporary realist painters fighting the dominant abstract trends of the era. Day’s artwork earned prestigious recognition throughout his eight-decade career. His paintings were exhibited at major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Hudson River Museum, and the Robert Hull Fleming Museum. In 2006, the Vermont Arts Council honored his enduring creative legacy and cultural impact with the Walter Cerf Award for Lifetime Achievement. Today, Day is remembered as a master of perspective who successfully bridged the gap between traditional representation and modern structural innovation.
