Mid-Century post impressionist oil on board of waterlillies by French artist Marc Mussier. Signed and dated 1959 to the reverse. This evocative oil painting captures a serene aquatic scene. Lush lily pads float across a deep, muted surface. The composition balances organic shapes with a rhythmic flow. Broad brushstrokes define the greenery in varying shades of moss and lime. Two delicate blossoms emerge from the water. Their pale petals contrast with the dark depths below. The artist employs a rich palette to evoke a sense of quiet contemplation. Light dances softly across the rounded leaves. Every stroke conveys a tactile quality. The atmosphere remains intimate and timeless. A subtle tension exists between the vivid yellow highlights and the cool grey background. This artwork translates a fleeting moment of nature into a lasting visual poem. The scene is framed by a classic wooden border that complements the earthy tones. The focus remains on the delicate interplay of light and shadow upon the water. Born on March 14, 1891, in Marcigny (Saône-et-Loire); died on October 27, 1960, in Paris; plasterer-painter, PTT employee, journalist, radio sound technician; trade unionist (CGT, then CGTU), assistant secretary of the postal federation; political activist (Socialist, Communist, then Socialist again). Marc Mussier exhibited his work in Parisian galleries, both before and after the war. An article in *Ce Soir* dated May 2, 1939, described him as follows: "Marc Mussier—formerly a postal worker and then a journalist, and now a radio sound technician—has always been a painter. He became one without a teacher. He remains one, 'just as others are gamblers, drunkards, hunters, fishermen, or photographers.' He makes this admission in the broad outline he provides to announce his exhibition (Galerie Carrefour, 141 Boulevard Raspail). A preface? No. Rather, the explanations of a man who feels the need to apologize for painting the oldest, most dilapidated houses of the *Zone*, joyless street corners, and—instead of blue skies and exhilarating landscapes—[scenes of a different sort]. Exhibitions at the *Salon des Indépendants* and the *Maison de la Culture* have revealed in this artist—regardless of his subject matter—a love for his craft, a humility, and powers of observation that have always been the prerequisites for true painters to hone their art."
