About the Item

A huge mid 20th century French oil on canvas depicting the Hotel des Artistes, by Maurice Loirand. Striking and unusual work from the 1950's on exhibition scale by this very interesting artist. Maurice Loirand is featured in Anatole Jakovsky;s "Peintres Naifs" which is considered to be the bible on French Naif painters. In the publication he describes Loirand as "better than Lefranc" and "among the best naive artists" because he "tackles large compositions". This is certainly such a composition. The work is signed lower right and comes from a collection of Maurice Loirand paintings that we attained from the collection of a friend of the artist. Further inscribed with location on the reverse Artist: Maurice Loirand (French, 1922-2008) Title: Dinard, Bretagne Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 26 x 39 inches (66 x 100 cm) Maurice Loirand was born in La Montagne, Loire. He was a metalworker at the Arsenal of Indret. Resistant under the Occupation, he became a self-taught artist and moved to Paris where he met the painters André Lenormand, Fernand Léger, Matisse and Picasso. He also knew the poet René Guy Cadou, who particularly appreciated his work. He travelled extensively with exhibitions in Paris, Rome, Milan, Rio de Janeiro, New York. He lived in Japan for around 15 years and married the poet Kazué Shimotori. Maurice Loirand's paintings can be found among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts of Nantes, the Naive Art Museum Anatole Jakovsky of Nice, the Museu do Sol in Penápolis.
