About the Item

A beautiful mid 20th century French oil on canvas depicting the artist in a Paris street, by Maurice Loirand. Maurice Loirand is featured in Anatole Jakovsky's "Peintres Naifs" which is considered to be the bible on French Naif painters. In the publication he describes Loirand as "better than Lefranc" and "among the best naive artists". The charming work is signed lower right and comes from a collection of Maurice Loirand paintings that we attained from the collection of a friend of the artist. Inscribed with title on the reverse. Artist: Maurice Loirand (French, 1922-2008) Title: À Paris Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 18 x 10.5 inches (46 x 27 cm) Maurice Loirand was born in La Montagne, Loire. He was a metalworker at the Arsenal of Indret. Resistant under the Occupation, he became a self-taught artist and moved to Paris where he met the painters André Lenormand, Fernand Léger, Matisse and Picasso. He also knew the poet René Guy Cadou, who particularly appreciated his work. He travelled extensively with exhibitions in Paris, Rome, Milan, Rio de Janeiro, New York. He lived in Japan for around 15 years and married the poet Kazué Shimotori. Maurice Loirand's paintings can be found among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts of Nantes, the Naive Art Museum Anatole Jakovsky of Nice, the Museu do Sol in Penápolis. 'Place Pigalle', oil and gouache on art paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). Pigalle is well known to tourists who want to experience "Paris by night". It is home to some of Paris' most famous cabarets such as the Moulin Rouge which was immortalised by artist Toulouse-Lautrec. Lautrec's studio was here as was Picasso's, Vincent Van Gogh's and that of Andre Breton. In 1928 Josephine Baker opened her first nightclub next door to Breton's apartment. It is certainly a historical landmark of Paris and well known to so many visitors of this beautiful city.
