About the Item

Fishing Boats and Figures on a Sunlit Beach with a Bright Blue Sky Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) Watercolour and pencil on artist paper, unframed. Paper: 5 × 7 inches. Provenance: from the artist’s estate sale in Paris, France. Condition: fair overall condition with age-related marks, spotting and surface wear, as visible in the photographs. An appealing original watercolour and pencil work by Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) depicting a tranquil coastal scene with fishing boats and figures along a sunlit beach. A small rowing boat rests prominently on the shore in the foreground, accompanied by figures tending to the boats and their equipment. Several sailing boats are scattered across the calm water beyond, their masts and sails lightly described in pencil against the expansive blue sky. Soft washes of blue, cream and sandy ochre give the composition a wonderfully light and summery quality. Mazeilie combines freely applied watercolour with quick, expressive pencil lines, particularly effective in the loosely rendered boats and figures. The spontaneous handling gives the work the character of a study made directly from life on the coast. Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) lived and worked in Montmartre, with a studio on the famous Place du Tertre. His love of the coast led him to also maintain a studio on the Brittany coastline. Born in Clichy, Hauts-de-Seine, Paris in 1924, Mazeilie painted coastal scenes in Brittany, Parisian landscapes and architecture, Venetian cityscapes and portraiture. He later spent time in the United States, settling in San Diego, California, where he became a longstanding figure in the artists’ community at Spanish Village. The work has excellent provenance, having come directly from the artist’s estate sale in Paris.
