About the Item

Parisian View across the Seine with Bell Tower, Bridge and Strolling Figures Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) Watercolour on artist paper, unframed. Signed lower right. Artwork: 5 × 7 inches. Provenance: from the artist’s estate sale in Paris, France. Condition: good overall condition with some age-related wear, as visible in the photographs . A charming original watercolour by Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924–2021) depicting an atmospheric view of Paris beside the River Seine. Figures populate the riverside in the foreground, while a prominent bell tower and surrounding Parisian architecture rise amongst the trees to the left. The Seine can be seen stretching through the composition, with a bridge crossing the river beyond and the distant Paris skyline softly suggested beneath an expansive sky. Mazeilie uses loose, expressive washes of blue, ochre, green and warm peach, capturing the light and atmosphere of the city with an appealing immediacy. Mazeilie lived and worked in Montmartre, with a studio on the famous Place du Tertre. Paris and its architecture provided an important source of inspiration throughout his career, alongside the coastal landscapes of Brittany, Venetian cityscapes and portraiture. The painting has excellent provenance, having come directly from the artist’s estate sale in Paris.
