And it is this silence that speaks loudest. ‘In the early evening’ is a work created not in a studio, but under the open sky, at that unique time of day when the lake ceases to be merely water and becomes a mirror of eternity. Oleksandr Khrapachov painted this piece en plein air in 2017 — where the forest meets the shore, where birdsong no longer breaks the silence, but merely emphasises it. The surface of the lake here is the main protagonist. Unflinching, evening-drenched, almost frozen—it holds onto the last light of day with a tenderness that only nature, in a state of absolute tranquillity, is capable of. The artist did not overthink or embellish: he simply caught the moment. He managed to capture that brief interval between sunset and twilight, when everything around softens and takes on a certain contemplative dignity. The work is executed in an organic blend of academic composition and impressionistic freedom of brushstroke. The 50×60 cm format on oil canvas is large enough to allow the landscape to breathe fully; compact enough to find its place in any space — from a cosy study to a living room, where one feels compelled to linger with one’s gaze.
