About the Item

French 19th century oil on canvas painting by Paul Charles Emmanuel Gallard-Lepinay (1842-1885), is of ships on the Venetian coast. Gallard-Lepinay is renowned for his maritime work, most notably Venice but also the French coast of Marseilles and Antibes, and Algiers. Gallard-Lepinay exhibited in the famous Paris Salon from 1864 through 1884, and served as the painter to the Marine Ministry of France. His work is impressionistic, but also demonstrates fine drawing skills more admired by the Salon peers. His work can be seen in Museums in France and also the Rijksmuseum in Holland. This fine work is impressive in size and scope, with tall ship in the background, sailing ships with intricate rope and net treatment, and rowboat on the edge of the lagoon. Water reflections are particularly lovely. This impressionist style work was done during the French impressionist period in 1860s to 1880s France. Gallard Lepinay lived and died in Paris, and though his life was short, the time he flourished was in the original impressionism era. The sight inside the liner is nearly 24" high and 33" wide. The frame is almost 3 inches wide on all four sides. Framed size is nearly 39" wide, and almost 30" high. The painting is presented in its likely original gilt liner, however the frame is later 20th century. Labels on the back indicate it was re-framed in 1986 with wooden gilt framing. Artist confirmed by French art consultant, and signed lower left. Fine example of his work. Stable craquelure consistent with age is evident, and the painting may have been lined. However no surface restoration is noted. The painting and frame are in overall very good condition, ready to be hung.

Three ships on rough seas, Dutch, 17th Century, oil on board

Located in Hillsborough, NC

Dutch School, 17th century oil painting on board, this work features a golden ship on blue seas with white crests against a stormy clouded sky. In the distance more ships can be seen, and a spot of blue sky gives the stormy clouds relief. Light shines through the white clouds casting shadows of color on the gray storm and choppy sea waters. Dramatic and masterful. Presented in overall very good condition in what may be the original mahogany wood frame. Excellent for an office, library, den or study, but can also be effective in a living room, dining room or bedroom. The frame has a rich wood tone. Easy to ship and ready to hang.
