About the Item

Paulémile Pissarro (French, 1884–1972), Bords de l'Andelle, oil on canvas, signed lower left, painted circa 1950 — a Normandy river landscape by the youngest son of Camille Pissarro and pupil of Claude Monet. A line of pollarded willows stands along the bank of the Andelle in early spring, their heavy amputated trunks in violet-brown and ochre carrying up into a haze of thin bare shoots just breaking into pale green. Behind them the meadow runs back in emerald and acid yellow to a soft blue-grey ridge, and the river itself lies flat and silver across the lower left, holding the trunks as broken dark reflections. In the right foreground the bank rises in coarse grass with the first pink flowers in it. The paint is applied very heavily with the knife: the willow trunks are built out of thick slabs and ridges of pigment, the young foliage is flicked on in short dragged strokes, and the whole surface stands proud of the canvas so that the picture genuinely changes as the light in a room moves across it. What it captures is the specific in-between moment of a Normandy spring — leaf just coming, water still cold and colourless, the light high and diffuse. Pollarded willows on a riverbank were a Pissarro subject in the fullest sense. Paulémile's first exhibited work, shown at the Salon des Indépendants in 1905, was Bords de l'Epte à Éragny — the riverbank at the village where he had grown up and where his father had painted for twenty years. Forty-five years later he was still painting the same motif on a different Normandy river, and the continuity is not accident but inheritance. Born at Éragny-sur-Epte in 1884, he was the youngest of Camille Pissarro's five painter sons. After his father's death in 1903 it was Claude Monet, his godfather, who taught him to paint at Giverny. In 1924 he bought a house at Lyons-la-Forêt in the Eure, on the Andelle, and Monet himself designed the garden there — a remarkable thing for a young painter to have been given, and the reason this stretch of river recurs throughout his work. He established himself in Paris in the 1920s, sharing a studio with Kees van Dongen and spending summers painting with Vlaminck, Dunoyer de Segonzac and Dufy, and from 1930 divided his time between Lyons-la-Forêt and the Suisse Normande, where he settled at Clécy on the Orne and remained until his death in 1972. Reflections in still water were his particular preoccupation across the whole of that long career. His work is held in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and he was given his first American solo exhibition at the Wally Findlay Gallery, New York, in 1967. Signed lower left. Canvas 18 x 24 inches (45.7 x 61 cm); framed 25 x 31 inches (63.5 x 78.7 cm). In very good original condition. Provenance: private collection, France.
