Original Antique Western Nevada Desert Oil Landscape by Phoebe K. Higgins A mid-century desert oil landscape of Western Nevada by Phoebe K. Higgins (American, 1895 - c 1960), circa 1950. The composition showcases a broad, arid vista with rolling hills and distant mountains under a soft, pastel sky — a classic representation of the Great Basin or Mojave Desert areas typical of western Nevada. The painting's naturalistic color palette and attention to geological forms is a wonderful example of the realism influenced by the traditions of American Western art from the early to mid-20th century. Western Nevada is home to areas like the Sierra Nevada foothills, the Black Rock Desert, and near the Nevada Test Site, and has inspired many artists due to its expansive, untamed beauty and unique light conditions. She studied with J. Craig Sheppard of the University of Nevada, and Hans Meyer-Kassell. She exhibited at many regional Western Nevada showings. Higgins was a member of the Nevada Art Association.
