About the Item

A beautiful 1930's French impressionist oil on canvas depicting a landscape in the Haute Loire region with hay bale and hilltop village, by René Aubert. Excellent quality work in very good original condition by this noted French artist. Signed lower right and still retaining it's original hand written artist's label on the reverse. Artist: René Aubert (French, 1894-1977) Title: Landscape in Haute Loire Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 22 x 18 inches (56 x 46 cm) René Aubert attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière then the Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was a student of Lucien Simon. Initially a cartoonist, he covered legal cases for the press. He exhibited simultaneously at the Salon of French Artists from 1926 to 1942, receiving several prizes and distinctions. At the same time, the quality of his press drawings aroused requests for illustrations in the publishing world. René Aubert was professor of drawing in the city of Versailles. In 1938 he was appointed director of the School of Art (which became the School of Fine Arts in 1953), and retained this position until 1966. If René Aubert is known for still lifes and genre scenes, the most important part of his work relates to landscapes, often located in the village of Meslay-le-Vidame (Eure-et-Loir). His death was followed by a retrospective tribute organized by the city of Versailles in December 1977.

Haymaking in Provence, Impressionist Landscape with Figure and Mountain View

Located in Genève, GE

Dimensions with frame: 51 x 59 x 6 cm. Signed in the lower left corner. An atmospheric Impressionist landscape depicting the hay harvest in the countryside. Rendered with expressive brushwork and a luminous palette of golden yellows, soft greens, and muted blue-greys, the composition captures a tranquil summer day during the fenaison (haymaking season). Rolling fields, cypress trees, and distant mountains create depth and serenity across the scene. The artist employs loose, painterly strokes and subtle tonal harmonies characteristic of early to mid-20th century landscape painting. The warm light and rural subject matter evoke the timeless charm of French Provence and the Mediterranean countryside, reflecting the enduring influence of French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
