About the Item

This late work by Rockwell Kent exemplifies his mature approach to landscape as a space of contemplation rather than topographical description. Built on a calm horizontal structure, the composition presents a distant landform emerging through a restrained range of cool blue and grey tones. The reduced palette and softened contours create a sense of silence and inward focus characteristic of Kent’s philosophical landscapes of the 1960s. Executed in pastel, the surface is matte and delicately layered, allowing subtle tonal transitions that enhance the atmospheric depth of the scene. Nature here is treated as a universal, timeless presence—an expression of balance, solitude, and moral clarity central to Kent’s late artistic vision. The work is signed on verso. On the reverse, the artist inscribed “I Love Ukraine”, a rare personal dedication that gives the work exceptional historical and emotional significance. Provenance Gifted by the artist to the Ukrainian Ambassador to Canada; subsequently acquired from the ambassador’s widow. Notes During the 1960s, Rockwell Kent visited the Soviet Union, including Ukraine, within the framework of cultural exchanges. He expressed a particular affinity for Ukrainian landscapes, light, and cultural depth—an experience reflected in a number of his late landscape works.
