Im Vorsatzblatt des anlässlich seiner Ausstellung in der Galerie Pels-Leusden in Berlin im Jahre 1982 erschienenen Kataloges findet sich folgende Widmung: “Für den sehr begabten Roland Ladwig, der seinesgleichen im heutigen Deutschland nicht findet. Gelegentlich des Besuches 15. V. 70 bei O. Kokoschka.” Dieser Satz drückt nicht nur die künstlerische Wertschätzung Kokoschkas für Ladwig aus, sondern kann darüber hinaus als geistige und stilistische Standortbestimmung für eine außergewöhnliche Künstlerpersönlichkeit gesehen werden. Während in einigen Frühwerken, in figurativen Arbeiten, wie auch in seinen norwegischen Landschaften der 60-er und 70-er Jahre noch formale und inhaltliche Bezüge zu Edvard Munch anklingen, finden die Arbeiten der letzten Jahrzehnte ihren Ausgangspunkt im Spannungsfeld zwischen dem Spätwerk eines Lovis Corinth und den Arbeiten Kokoschkas. Ohne die vielfältigen Ausprägungen zeitgenössischen Kunstschaffens je aus dem Auge zu verlieren, sah er für sich nie die Notwendigkeit, sich vorgegebenen tagesaktuellen Trends und Ismen anzupassen und einem doch oft recht fragwürdigen Zeitgeist Tribut zu zollen. Die geistige Heimat seines künstlerischen Anliegens ist der Expressionismus der Klassischen Moderne. Die eruptive Kraft und Unmittelbarkeit seines malerischen Vortrags hätte sich für eine Adaptierung an zeitgeistige Moden wohl auch kaum geeignet. Zu eindringlich, zu spontan, zu leidenschaftlich ist der dynamische Duktus seiner malerischen Niederschrift, um sich durch einen rational gesteuerten formalen Überbau disziplinieren zu lassen, zu scharfsichtig andererseits sein Auge, zu chirurgisch präzise die topographische Niederschrift und formale Bestimmtheit seiner künstlerischen Mitteilung, um sich mit seinem malerischen Anliegen in der Beliebigkeit einer gegenstandsloseren Bildsprache zu genügen.
