About the Item

This contemporary marine painting depicts the celebrated J-Class yachts Ranger and Lionheart racing off The Needles, Isle of Wight, during the 2012 yachting season. Under full sail, the two yachts are shown passing the iconic Needles Lighthouse, with the famous chalk stacks rising beyond, one of Britain's most recognisable maritime landmarks and a traditional setting for prestigious regattas. The artist combines exceptional technical accuracy with a refined sense of atmosphere, faithfully rendering the distinctive hull forms, towering rigs and elegant sail plans of these magnificent yachts. The brilliant blues of the Solent contrast with the luminous white sails and chalk cliffs, conveying both the exhilaration of competitive sailing and the clarity of a fine summer's day. An inscription on the reverse identifying the work as "Ranger & Lionheart Racing off The Needles, 2012" confirms the subject and dates the scene. The painting records a notable moment in the modern revival of the J-Class, the legendary racing yachts originally designed for the America's Cup during the 1930s. Ranger is a faithful modern recreation of the 1937 America's Cup defender, launched in 2003, while Lionheart, launched in 2010, is one of the most successful modern J-Class yachts. Their appearances together at regattas around the Isle of Wight have become highlights of the international classic yachting calendar. Executed with considerable attention to both maritime detail and compositional balance, the painting celebrates the enduring elegance of these remarkable yachts and the rich sailing heritage of the Solent, making it an attractive work for collectors of marine art and classic yachting. signed bottom right: R C Mitchell canvas size 36.5 x 54 cm
