About the Item

The Hidden Villa – Expressionist Garden Landscape, Early 20th Century - Unsigned. Initials “F.B.” and indistinct inscription on the reverse. European School, circa 1920–1940. Dimensions: 61 x 51 cm (24 x 20.1 in.) Gray wooden frame dimension with frame : 75.5 x 65 x 4 cm This striking oil on canvas, measuring 61 x 51 cm (24 x 20.1 in.), depicts an elegant classical villa or pavilion almost enveloped by luxuriant vegetation. A monumental staircase rises through the composition toward the architecture on the right, while dense trees, shrubs and exotic-looking foliage fill the surrounding garden. Rather than describing the landscape with precise naturalistic detail, the artist constructs the scene through vigorous, heavily textured brushwork and an exceptionally rich palette of deep greens, turquoise blues, ochres, yellows and touches of vivid red. The pronounced impasto is one of the painting's most distinctive qualities. Layers of paint create an almost sculptural surface, particularly throughout the vegetation, giving the landscape a remarkable sense of movement and vitality. Against this exuberant natural setting, the pale architectural structure and dark staircase provide a strong geometric counterpoint. The composition has an intriguing, almost dreamlike atmosphere: the architecture appears partly hidden within an abundant garden, suggesting a secluded Mediterranean or European estate. Stylistically, the work combines the broken color and interest in landscape associated with Post-Impressionism with the freer brushwork and heightened chromatic expression of early 20th-century Expressionism. The reverse bears the initials “F.B.” and a further indistinct inscription; however, no secure attribution to a particular artist has been established. A highly decorative and visually powerful early 20th-century painting, particularly appealing for its rich surface, expressive handling of paint and mysterious garden setting. Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Initials “F.B.” and indistinct inscription on the reverse. European School, circa 1920–1940. Dimensions: 61 x 51 cm (24 x 20.1 in.).

A vibrant and richly textured garden landscape by A. Ducommun, signed in the lower left corner. Executed in oil on canvas, this luminous composition captures the exuberance of a flowering garden at the height of the growing season. The painting presents an abundant profusion of flowers arranged in layered bands of color leading toward a group of rural buildings in the distance. Blossoms in shades of pink, crimson, yellow, white, violet, and blue create a dazzling mosaic across the foreground and middle ground, while the architecture beyond provides structure and depth to the composition. The result is a harmonious balance between cultivated nature and the rural landscape. A. Ducommun demonstrates a confident and expressive painterly approach. Broad brushstrokes, richly applied pigments, and vibrant color relationships convey the vitality of the garden rather than a botanical description of individual flowers. The artist focuses on atmosphere, rhythm, and chromatic harmony, transforming the scene into a celebration of color and light. Particularly noteworthy is the treatment of the floral masses, which are rendered through energetic touches of paint that create a remarkable sense of movement and visual richness. The composition unfolds through a succession of textures and tones, inviting the viewer's eye to wander through the garden pathways toward the distant houses and softly suggested landscape beyond. The palette recalls the traditions of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist garden painting...

Oil on canvas depicting a quiet architectural landscape, signed and dated Jean Beyeler, 1974. The composition centers on a modest, light-toned house set within a darkened landscape, flanked by tall trees that frame the structure and reinforce the vertical rhythm of the scene. The building emerges subtly from its surroundings, its pale façade contrasting with the deep greens, charcoals, and muted browns of the foliage and ground. Executed with a restrained, atmospheric palette and softened brushwork, the painting conveys a contemplative and almost timeless mood. Beyeler’s treatment of form privileges atmosphere over detail: edges dissolve gently into shadow, while the sky is rendered in layered greys and warm undertones, suggesting dusk or overcast light. The result is a poetic balance between architecture and nature, solitude and presence. Signed and dated lower left. An evocative example of late 20th-century European figurative landscape painting, well suited for collectors of modern landscapes, architectural scenes, or works emphasizing mood and tonal harmony.
