About the Item

Title: Victorian Church Landscape Watercolour Louisa Wortley 1865 by Louisa J. Wortley (British 19th century) original watercolour on artists paper laid down on a larger support sheet image size approximately 10.25 x 15.75 inches numbered upper right No 2 L J W appears dated 1865 lower left condition: good antique condition with age related toning and minor handling marks consistent with age provenance: private collection United Kingdom A finely painted nineteenth century watercolour depicting a small rural church set within a gently rolling landscape. The building is rendered with careful attention to architectural detail, featuring a square tower, pointed Gothic windows and a pitched tiled roof. A stone wall encloses the churchyard, while a solitary figure dressed in red stands along the path approaching the entrance. The composition captures a quiet moment within the English countryside, with soft washes of colour used to depict the surrounding trees, distant hills and atmospheric sky. The artist employs delicate tonal modelling and controlled brushwork to create depth and structure within the architecture and landscape. The mount is inscribed “No 2 – L.J.W.” suggesting that the sheet formed part of a numbered sequence of drawings produced during the artist’s early training. Architectural subjects such as churches were commonly used in nineteenth century drawing instruction as they allowed students to develop skills in perspective, structure and composition. This work forms part of a small group of drawings attributed to Louisa J. Wortley dating from the mid nineteenth century, offering an appealing glimpse into the study practices of a young Victorian artist.
