Victorian Nineteenth Century Marine Oil Painting of Fishing Boats off the Coast in Choppy Seas at Sunrise. A Traditional British Marine Scene off the Coast depicting Fishing Boats in a swell. The sea appears almost translucent and sky looks a little foreboding! A hard days work ahead for these hardy Fisherfolk. Fishing Boats off the Coast at Sunrise - Beautiful Oil Painting on Canvas from William Callcott Knell, one of the superbly talented artists from the famous Knell family. He was the brother of Adolphus Knell and both of them are equally remarkable. This evocative and thrilling moody marine scene is depicting vessels battling the elements with a storm either receding or moving into their orbit. The drama is palpable, one can almost feel the crashing of the waves on the rather small and vulnerable looking boat. The sky perfectly captures a stormy moment and the colour is intense and the overall effect is realistic. There is detritus in the foreground with bits of wood and buoys bobbing about. Framed size is 16 by 25 inches. WILLIAM CALLCOTT KNELL Flourished 1848 – 1879 Oil on Canvas, 7 by 14 inches, Signed and Framed. William Callcott Knell was thought to have been the son of William Adolphus Knell. He lived with his father in Kentish Town, London. Callcott Knell was also the pupil of his father and they painted alongside each other. Between 1848 and 1865 he exhibited 17 pictures at leading London venues, including 3 at the Royal Academy, 3 at the British Institute and 9 at the Royal Society of British Artists. Of his exhibits many were shipping scenes at sunrise or sunset. Like his father, Callcott Knell was obviously influenced by the Dutch tradition. From 1860 onwards, his style became looser though still retaining its Dutch influence.
