Marcos Bontempo was born in Argentina in 1969. At the age of 6, he came to live in Spain with his family. Marcos now lives in Ronda, a town in Andalusia known for its beauty, its bullfighting and some important figures who spent time there. The poet Rilke lived in Ronda for a long time, Ernest Hemingway wrote poetry in Ronda, and shared with Orson Wells and Ava Gardner a passion for bullfighting and a friendship with the famous bullfighter, Antonio Ordonez. Unbeknownst to many people, Orson Wells' ashes are buried in the estate of his best friend, Antonio Ordonez. Marcos Bontempo has suffered several schizophrenic episodes. Painting, and his connection with nature seem to be his best therapy. Marcos paints like he breathes, sometimes naturally and other times, in fits and starts, led by his anxieties and his demons. Alone, every day in his studio, he is haunted by the outside world, in some way like the figures presented here, floating in a universe of polymorphous human beings and humanly shaped animals. Anyone who has met Marcos is unable to forget the candor in his eyes and the flow of his words which cry out all at once the feelings of his insides being ripped apart, between his purity and the haunting images that assail him. Here are a few words that Marcos wrote to Frank Maresca on the eve of this exhibition of his works: "Thank you to Mr. Frank Maresca for this opportunity and for showing my works in this very important venue, thank you from the bottom of my heart, my family and I are so appreciative of your kindness and generosity, I want you to know that my work belongs to all of those who see themselves in it, it is my privilege to do what I do, to express what I feel and I live trying to be a free man, thank you, thank you so much, I wish you the best in your life and in your heart" - - - - RICCO/MARESCA was founded in 1979 on Broome Street in New York?€™s then-emerging SoHo gallery district. The gallery relocated to TriBeCa in the 1980s, then later moved to Wooster Street in SoHo, which by then had become a well-developed center of contemporary-art galleries. In 1997, Ricco/Maresca became one of the first galleries to become established in the new Chelsea art district. The gallery is currently located at 529 West 20th Street. Following in the footsteps of the legendary New York dealer Sidney Janis, Ricco/Maresca has championed and showcased the art of self-taught masters working outside the art-historical mainstream. The gallery focuses both on significant contemporary art in various media and on historically important American art of the 20th century. Over a period of 25 years, with publishing partners that have included Alfred A. Knopf; Bulfinch Press; Little, Brown and Company; and Pomegranate Press; among others, Ricco/Maresca has produced books that have helped blur the lines that traditionally have separated conventional art-historical categories and the vernacular-art category. The gallery is a participant in the Armory Show, New York; Art Chicago; Scope New York; Scope Miami; AIPAD and the PINTA Modern and Contemporary Latin-American Art Show, New York. The gallery works closely with major museums and collectors, and offers services that range from collection management to installation design and conservation.
