About the Item

A series of four paintings - acrylic on stretched canvas - unframed, by Canadian artist Damien Smith (born 1969). This unique series depicts four characters in a New York City erotic gay bar circa 1990s. An older gentleman and patron of the club smokes up a cloud in this underground space as the erotic male dancer entertains on a rotating stage. The resident drag act watches over the house while a handsome but hardened young man signals his availability to an eyeing clientele. These artworks will decorate an entire wall. The quality of the painting is indisputable and the subjects certainly compelling. The series is being sold together in order to retain the narrative of the work. They are: Rent-boy with green background; Drag Queen in Full Regalia; Paying Customer Puffing on his Pipe; and, The Talent. A short video clip of these works can be provided upon request. About the Artist: Canadian-born artist Damien Smith (1969 - ) is better known for his architectural artwork held in collections such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Canada Council and the Walker Art Center; and in exhibitions in the Brooklyn Museum of Art and Gasworks Gallery in London, UK. These four paintings (stretched-canvas, unframed) however, deviate from that theme in this entirely original creation. The works are unsigned however, BIA has spoken directly with the artist who acknowledged creation of these works. Dimensions of each of the four paintings are the same: 61 cm (24") x 61 cm (24")

By Daniel Maltzman

Located in Laguna Beach, CA

Born and raised in Beverly Hills, California, Daniel Maltzman has always been interested in pop culture and advertisement. His early career consisted of promoting the hottest clubs in Hollywood and running a successful business in the fashion industry. A switch to the art world was natural for Maltzman as his obsession with creativity and expression only grew with his exposure to the art scene that so profoundly impacted Los Angeles nightlife. Much of Maltzman’s inspiration draws from his relationships with people who have fast-paced lifestyles, fame, and fortune. Maltzman is also fascinated by Los Angeles’ contemporary urban settings and street style aesthetics. Mixing acrylics with spray paints and juxtaposing graphic images amongst figurative depictions, Daniel Maltzman’s work is captivating and richly dynamic. Striking colors and bold mark-making show evidence of Mark Grotjahn’s influence on Maltzman’s work, and admiration for Andy Warhol’s muses are consistent with Maltzman’s subject of choice. Collectors such as Justin Bieber...
