About the Item

Attributed to Enoch Seeman the Younger (1661-1744). Portrait of a Lady, seated in a landscape wearing a white silk gown with red cloak, leaning on a stone plinth. C.1715. Oil on canvas in a period giltwood frame. Dimensions: 140 x118cm (55 x 46in) Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland Enoch Seeman the Younger was born in Danzig, now Gdansk in Poland in 1694. His father, Enoch the Elder, of Flemish origin, was also a painter and took him to London in 1704 where they resided in St Martin's Lane. One of Enoch's first commissions was a group portrait of 'Colonel Bissett and his family' (Forbes Castle, Aberdenshire) - his style heavily influenced by that of Godfrey Kneller. Enoch frequently painted self-portraits, one of which is currently in the British Museum and it was engraved by J.G. Schmidt. From 1717 he received Royal patronage and in 1730 he completed a full-length portrait of George I in his coronation robes (Middle Temple, London) and also George II some years later (Windsor Castle Royal Collection). Other examples of his work include a portrait of Sir Isaac Newton, formerly in the ownership of Thomas Hollis FSA, and a dual portrait of the first Duke of Marlborough and the military engineer John Armstrong, now at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire. His last and largest work was of 'The Lady Cust and her nine children' in 1743, now at Belton House in Lincolnshire.
