About the Item

ARTIST - Jehan Frison (1882–1961) // PERIOD - Circa 1926 // ORIGIN - Belgium // MEDIUM - Oil on Panel // STYLE - Belgian Fauvism, Orientalism // SUBJECT - Malika, Portrait of a North African Woman // DIMENSIONS - 47 × 37 cm (18.5 × 14.6 in), Unframed; 52.5 × 42.5 cm (20.7 × 16.7 in), Framed // SIGNATURE - Signed lower right; titled “Malika” upper right // CONDITION - Good This portrait of a young North African woman, dated circa 1926, titled *Malika* and signed by the Belgian artist Jehan Frison (1882–1961), belongs to a particularly vivid period in his career, when color became one of the principal expressive elements of his painting. Although closely associated with the Belgian Fauves and Brabant Fauvism, Frison nevertheless developed a highly individual style—more nervous and direct—in which dark outlines, fiery reds, and strongly characterized faces lend his figures an immediate intensity. Although the painting is undated, several Orientalist works in the same vein are known, including figures closely related to this work and sometimes explicitly set in Fez, Bou Saâda, or Algiers. The dated works in this group are concentrated around 1926–1927, allowing Malika to be placed within this particularly vibrant phase of the artist’s career. Like many painters of the period who were drawn to the Maghreb, Frison sought the intensity of North African light and color and the visual richness of traditional dress. Here, the powerful black contours echo the sitter’s dark gaze, giving the figure a dynamic structure while retaining a distinctly poetic quality. A few years earlier, Frison had already gained significant recognition, notably through his participation in the 1920 Venice Biennale. This portrait, therefore, does not belong to an uncertain early phase but to a period of artistic maturity, when his pictorial language had become freer, more concise, and increasingly vibrant. Also worth noting is an aspect of Frison’s working practice: on the reverse side of several of his paintings appear rapid graphic marks, almost gestural in character, as though the artist had wiped his brush there or simply allowed the movement of painting to extend beyond the image itself. This detail reinforces the sense of a practice driven by immediacy, instinct, and gesture. The painting is signed in the lower right corner and titled "Malika" in the upper right corner. It is in good overall condition. This artwork qualifies for free shipping throughout Italy and Europe. The package is fully tracked, and a signature is required upon delivery.
