About the Item

Leopold Carl Muller Portrait of a Girl 1834 - 1892 Oil on wood panel, signed lower left Image size: 10 ¼ x 6½ inches (26 × 17 cm) Framed Whilst on his travels, Müller painted a series of single-person study portraits to depict the diverse cultures and costumes of the Egyptian peoples. This portrait depicts a fallaha woman - an indigenous rural farmer from the Nile Valley. The fellaheen are one of the oldest populations in Egypt, with their lineage and traditions traceable to the rise of Ancient Egypt. When Müller was in Egypt, the population of fellaheen was substantially higher than it is now - urbanisation has caused many fellaheen to relocate to Egypt’s cities and towns. Müller has used broad brushstrokes and a lack of detail on the garments worn by the fallaha woman to draw attention to her face. Her eyes - decorated with kohl - gaze downwards and imbue the work with a sense of serenity. It is highly likely that this sympathetic portrait, with its remarkable flesh tones - informed Müller’s staffage in his larger oil paintings. Leopold Carl Müller Leopold Carl Müller was born in Dresden in 1834 to Austrian parents and initially trained under his father, a lithographer. He embarked upon formal artistic education at the Viennese Academy, where he studied under Karl von Blaas and Christian Ruben. After his father passed away, Müller worked as an illustrator for a Vienna newspaper in order to support his family. He continued his studies nonetheless, embarking on repeated trips to Italy, Egypt and Hungary, growing a strong reputation for scenes of ordinary life. In the late 1860s, Müller earned a government stipend to visit the Exposition Universelle in Paris and was struck by the Orientalist movement there. From the early 1870s, he began to make regular trips to Egypt, the Balkans and Turkey, dedicating himself to painting portraits and genre scenes. Müller kept a studio in Cairo, where he would work for many months at a time in order to immerse himself in Egyptian culture to create realistic paintings. In fact, his students called him ‘Müller the Egyptian’. Müller reached great levels of success throughout Europe, exhibiting in Berlin, Vienna and Dresden. The Prince of Wales in England even personally encouraged Müller to send works to London to exhibit. He worked at the Viennese Academy and taught Ludwig Deutsch, amongst others, and is often considered as the father of the Austrian Orientalist school. Müller passed away in 1892 at the young age of 57, and was buried at the Central Cemetery in Vienna.

Henrietta Rae Her Eyes are Homes of Silent Prayer 1828-1928 Oil on canvas, signed lower right Image size: 24 x 20 inches (61 x 51cm) Original gilt frame Henrietta Rae’s painting Her Eyes are Homes of Silent Prayer takes its title from a famous line in Section XXXII of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's elegiac poem In Memoriam A.H.H. (1850). It describes Mary of Bethany's profound faith and love for Jesus, highlighting her silent, intense devotion after her brother Lazarus's resurrection. The line signifies deep love surpassing words, focusing on inner spirituality and divine reverence. The work depicts the head and shoulders of a woman in white, turning to look gently up top left of the canvas, her head crowned with ivy and set against a background of Chinese-style inspired motifs. The serene and pensive expression on the woman’s face reflects the subject of devotion described by Tennyson’s poem. Rae often depicted literary figures and this is not the only work by Rae that drew inspiration from Tennyson, with her painting Elaine Guarding the Shield of Lancelot based on the poem Lancelot and Elaine. However, other than the title and the sitter being lost in thought, there is little to identify the subject as one from literature. Victorian art frequently merged with literature to highlight moral, social and emotional themes, however, artists such as Leighton, with whom Rae was acquainted, chose to move away from narrative and design works based purely on aesthetic appeal. Here we see the same focus on beauty over the narrative of religious devotion on which Tennyson’s poem is based. The background of the work is based on Chinese paintings with auspicious clouds (Xiangyun 祥云; 祥雲) scrolls with Chinese-esque characters and two Chinese lion dogs (shíshī 石獅) flanking the woman’s head. In keeping with Chinese tradition, the shíshī are painted as a pair, symbolising the harmony of Yin and Yang. Chinese art had a significant impact on Victorian art, developing from the 18th Century ‘Chinoiserie’. Here, this is combined with ‘Japonisme’, a trend that had been growing from the 1850s, with its influence from Japanese woodblock prints in the flat pattern and vibrant colours. Rae was also influenced by Chinese and Japanese in her earlier work Azaleas (1895), similarly showing the head and shoulders of a woman, gazing up to the left, dressed in a kimono and holding a fan, against a background of an embroidered Chinese dragon. Henrietta Rae (1856 - 1928) Henrietta Rae was born 30th December 1856 in Hammersmith, London, to a civil servant father and musician mother as the youngest of seven children. Though her mother had trained her as a professional concert singer to ensure her future financial self-sufficiency, she began formally studying art aged 13 at the Queen Square School of Art before becoming Heatherley’s School of Art’s first female pupil. After at least five attempts she was awarded a seven-year scholarship to the Royal Academy of Arts and it was there that she met her husband, fellow painter and Academy student Ernest Normand...

Joseph-Auguste Rousselin French 1841 - 1916 Head Study Oil on board, signed with initials and signed verso Image size: 12 x 11 inches This head study provides an unbelievably moving portrait of an androgynous sitter. Employing incredible technique, the artist has achieved the highly finished porcelain skin, thoughtful eyes and pink lips of the sitter with incredible softness. The unfinished quality of the background make the composition of the work particularly satisfying to the modern eye. Loosely sketched dashes and brushy swoops outline the model's head. The mix of finished and more expressive elements reveals the artist's brilliant eye, technique and personality. Artistically, Rousselin does not seem to be influenced by the friendships that he forged with the Impressionists but rather he has remained rather faithful to the academic technique of William Bouguereau, whose studio he also used to frequent. This study is certainly comparable to the work by Bouguereau, specifically his graceful portraits of women. Bouguereau championed the traditional academic style and his methods were taught to him by a pupil of Ingres. Similar academic inspiration is apparent in this work, from the conscious posing of the subject to the evenly laid colours. Indeed, alike the work of Bouguereau this follows the same classical approach to composition, form and subject matter. The Artist Born in Paris in 1841, Rousselin grew up to be a French painter and art collector. From a young age he studied in the workshops of Charles Gleyre and Thomas Couture, here he met the young impressionist generation. His studio peers included Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Édouard Manet, with whom he forged strong bonds of friendship. It was at his invitation that his two friends Renoir and Sisley exhibited at the Salon of the Society of Friends of the Arts in Pau, a region where Rousselin had family ties. Manet invited him to his family home in Boulogne-sur-Mer where he had him pose in the summer of 1868 for 'Le Déjeuner dans l'Atelie'. Rousselin can be seen in the background of the painting as the man with the cigar, wearing a grey hat...
