About the Item

Marcel Hess Brussels 1873 – 1948 Grimbergen Belgian Painter 'Oriental Girl in Turban' Signature: signed lower right 'Marcel Hess' Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: image size 74 x 56 cm, frame size 77,5 x 60 cm Biography: Marcel Hess was a Belgian painter, draughtsman and illustrator, best known for his refined portraits, elegant figure studies, female nudes, floral compositions and still lifes. His work combines academic precision with a delicate sense of colour and atmosphere, placing him among the accomplished Belgian academic painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hess received his artistic education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he studied under the celebrated painter Jean-François Portaels. He later continued his training at the Academy of Düsseldorf, becoming associated with the renowned Düsseldorf School of Painting, whose emphasis on refined draughtsmanship and strong composition remained evident throughout his career. His portraits enjoyed an excellent reputation during his lifetime. Hess portrayed numerous women, writers, magistrates and members of the Belgian bourgeoisie with remarkable psychological insight and technical finesse. Alongside portraiture, he produced distinguished flower pieces and still lifes in both oil and pastel, admired for their harmonious compositions and subtle, luminous colour palette. A journey to Morocco further enriched his artistic vision, inspiring a warmer palette and a more expressive treatment of light. Hess also worked extensively as a draughtsman and illustrator, frequently combining graphite, charcoal and coloured pencil to create works of exceptional refinement and sensitivity. Although he exhibited only occasionally, Marcel Hess participated in the Deutsch-Nationale Kunstausstellung in Düsseldorf in 1907, demonstrating his connection with the international artistic circles of the Düsseldorf Academy. Later in his career, a retrospective exhibition was held at La Petite Galerie in Brussels, recognising the quality and consistency of his oeuvre. Marcel Hess spent his final years in Grimbergen, where he died in 1948. Today, his works are represented in private collections and in Belgian public collections, including museums in Ixelles and Sint-Joost-ten-Node. His name is included in the standard reference work Deux Siècles de Signatures d'Artistes de Belgique, confirming his place among the notable Belgian artists of his generation. His paintings continue to be appreciated for their elegance, refined execution and timeless academic quality.
