About the Item

Sir John Kiffin Williams O.B.E. R.A. 1918-2006, was a Welsh landscape painter. Kiffin Williams as he was known lived on Anglesey and was widely regarded as one of the greatest Welsh painters of the 20th Century. His work is widely collected and in constant demand not just in Wales but throughout the UK, his technique for his much loved landscapes was with a palette knife which is a difficult talent to master but they have a unique air of distinction and are somewhat mystical and gentle to the eye. This painting is a copy of his own self portrait which is held in the National Library of Wales which was painted in 1969, the date of the copy here is somewhat obscured by way of the artist being unknown. However this painting is clearly the hand of an accomplished artist who has captured the essence of Williams' work and is a rare portrait of the great painter. It is currently housed in a temporary frame and a new owner may prefer their own choice, however it is sufficient to display the painting here without the propensity to enhance. I have included a short biography of the artist Kyffin Williams for your interest. Sir Kyffin Williams (1918–2006) is widely regarded as the defining Welsh artist of the 20th century. Born in Anglesey, Wales, his path to art was entirely accidental. In 1941, he was invalided out of the British Army following an epilepsy diagnosis. His doctor famously suggested he take up painting for his health, inadvertently launching one of the most celebrated British artistic careers of his generation. Williams enrolled at London’s prestigious Slade School of Fine Art, where he discovered a natural, award-winning affinity for portraiture. He spent nearly 30 years combining his studio practice with a role as senior art master at Highgate School. In 1974, he returned permanently to his beloved home region of North Wales, dedicating the remainder of his long life to painting full-time. Williams is most instantly recognised for his bold, expressionist technique. Rather than traditional brushes, he preferred using a flexible palette knife to apply thick, heavy layers of oil paint (impasto) directly onto the canvas. This sculpting of paint lent a raw, sculptural energy and emotional gravity to his subjects. While globally renowned for his brooding, atmospheric landscapes of the Snowdonia mountains, Williams remained a prolific and deeply insightful portraitist. His self-portraits served as an intimate, lifelong visual diary. Free from the commercial pressure of pleasing a paying client, Williams used his own face as a canvas for raw psychological exploration. Across his self-portraits, Williams tracks his own evolution. The quizzical, searching young student. The intense, moustachioed mid-career craftsman holding his palette. The aging, vulnerable man confronting the challenges of chronic depression and physical mortality. This specific featured copy of his self-portrait highlights his vulnerability and fierce resilience of a legendary artist. Ultimately knighted for his immense contributions to the arts, Williams' self-portraits stand today as some of his most powerful, honest, and historically significant achievements.
