Romantic Portrait Paintings

ROMANTIC STYLE

In emphasizing emotion and imagination, romantic art shifted away from the restraint of classicism and neoclassicism that had dominated art in Europe since the Renaissance. Romanticism achieved its greatest popularity in art, literature, music and philosophy between 1780 and 1830, although its expression of individual experiences ranging from awe to passion informed culture in the decades after.

Landscape painting was especially popular during the romantic period, as were nature studies of wild animals and fantasies of exotic lands. Romanticism varied across Europe as it reacted to the rise of industrialization, a more personal relationship with faith that was distanced from the church and the rationalist thinking of the Enlightenment.

British painters such as John Constable and J.M.W. Turner responded dramatically to the light and atmosphere of the natural world, while William Blake conveyed humanity’s connection to the divine in his visionary art. In Germany, the late-18th-century Sturm und Drang, or Storm and Drive, movement, with its probing of the unconscious, inspired a sense of mystery in work by romantic artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge. In France, where the French Revolution had turned tradition upside down, Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix used lush brushwork to paint monumental canvases with tumultuous scenes of nature and history.

The romantic movement and its subject matter were a significant influence on the Pre-Raphaelites, Symbolists and the American painters of the Hudson River School, as well as on other cultural movements in the 19th and 20th centuries that saw artists build on this perspective in which art was guided by emotion rather than reason.

Mother and Child, Ecole de Paris, Large Oil on Canvas

By Guy Cambier

Located in Cotignac, FR

Ecole de Paris, mid century oil on canvas portrait of a mother and child by Guy Cambier. The painting is signed bottom left and there is a very faint chalk inscription with date to the back of the canvas. Presented in a fine custom gilt wood frame. This exquisite painting captures a tender, timeless moment between a mother and child, rendered with soft, evocative brushstrokes. The palette of muted earth tones with hints of blue and lavender imbues the scene with warmth and serenity. The mother, adorned in flowing robes, gazes downward with a gentle, contemplative expression, while the child's innocent face exudes calm and trust, resting securely in her embrace. The textured background, a blend of abstract patterns, contrasts with the smooth rendering of the figures, enhancing the ethereal atmosphere. The intricate gold frame adds a classic touch, emphasizing the painting's traditional elegance. This piece masterfully balances realism with expressive elements, capturing the universal essence of maternal love and protection. Its timeless appeal invites the viewer to reflect on the enduring bond depicted with grace and sensitivity. Guy Cambier (1923-2008) was born in Uccle-lez-Bruxelles, Belgium in 1923. He was part of the Post War School of Paris, Ecole De Paris, that included Andre Hambourg, Jean Carzou, Marcel Gromaire and Yolande Ardissone. At the age of nine years old, he lost the use of his legs caused by a tragic accident. An autodidact he studied the techniques and works of those artists he emulated, Corot and Watteau. Cambier started to exhibit in 1942, first in Belgium and afterwards in France on the Cote d’Azur as well as in the United States and in Paris at the Salon des Peintres Temoins de Leur Temps. In 1957, he received the Parisian award, “Le Prix de la Jeune Peintre”. He moved to the South of France in 1950 and resided in Grasse, where he spent most of the rest of his life as did so many famous painters at that time. Cambier became a favourite portrait artist of several celebrities and painted such dignitaries as Princess Grace of Monaco, Winston Churchill, Ingrid Bergman and Edward G Robinson...

French Mid 19th Century Portrait of an Italian Brigand. Oil on Canvas.

By Léon Cogniet

Located in Cotignac, FR

Mid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame. The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays. There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo). Bands of brigands who populated the hills of southern Italy were steady fodder for the Romantic imagination, and their exploits were reported both factually, fancifully and artistically The painting dates from a period when France, under its then leader Napoleon III, was involved in the conflicts in the Italian states and the unification and eventual creation of the nation of Italy. An earlier and similar portrait exists of the infamous brigand Mazzocchi by Achille-Etna Michallony . Léon Cogniet...

French Romantic School, 19th Century Portrait of a man, a selfportrait ? oil on paper 17.5 x 12 cm oval Framed under glass : 43 x 34.5 cm This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer. What this man seems to be staring at is himself. Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy. It has been suggested that this small oil on paper is close to the art of François Bonvin (1817-1887) and Théodule Ribot...

Edward Portielje 1861 – Antwerp – 1949 Dutch-Belgian Painter 'Mother and Child' Signature: signed lower left 'Edward Portielje' Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: image size 65,5 x 51 cm; frame size 79 x 64,5 cm Biography: Edward Portielje – Belgian genre painter from an Antwerp artist family. Edward Portielje was born in Antwerp on February 8, 1861, and passed away there on December 18, 1949. He came from a distinctly artistic family that had been involved in painting for multiple generations. His works are now held in public collections and museums in Antwerp, Chicago, Melbourne, Sydney, and Bordeaux. The Portielje family had its roots in the Netherlands. Edward’s grandfather owned a bookstore in Amsterdam specializing in luxury engravings. His father, Jan Portielje, however, chose a career in painting and studied at the Antwerp Academy. From the 1850s, Jan gained recognition for his refined portraits of the affluent bourgeoisie: barons, baronesses, and elegant ladies, often with a Spanish or Oriental touch. He even painted a portrait of King Leopold II. After marrying the Antwerp native Eulalia Lemaire, he settled permanently in Antwerp. The couple had five children, including Gerard...

Located in Valladolid, ES

A refined and unique portrait of a young noblewoman or aristocrat, executed in pastel on paper, signed by Edmond Jewrin and dated 1843. She is depicted in three-quarter view, seated in an armchair, with an innocent expression, her head slightly inclined to the left, looking directly at the viewer. She wears a beautiful white lace dress with bare shoulders, her arms resting in her lap. The leaf headdress is not merely an aesthetic embellishment, but rather part of the coded language of fashion and Romanticism of the period, symbolizing fidelity, marriage, and unwavering affection. Furthermore, during the 1840s and 1850s, there was a strong influence of classical mythology on formal court hairstyles. Adorning the hair with garlands of leaves (in the style of a laurel wreath or Bacchus wreath) evoked nymphs and goddesses of nature, projecting an image of purity, youth, and connection with nature. Despite the neutral, flat background in pastel blue, the artist manages to create space using a careful and precise technique, which meticulously captures the sitter's sweet facial features. It follows in the footsteps of the great 19th-century portrait painters of the Central European school, such as Franz Xaver Winterhalter. It retains its original oval, gilded wooden frame, protected by glass. The 19th century has sometimes been called "The Century of the Portrait." From its very inception, portraiture was associated with figures of economic, social, or political power who wished to display and perpetuate their influence, but it experienced its golden age during this century, especially in the last third, as it became a coveted form of distinction among those who could afford it. It extended to all kinds of techniques: painting, sculpture, medal making, miniatures, watercolor, drawing, etching, lithography, photography… Moreover, the influence of photography and the arts' growing move towards realism led to increasingly naturalistic depictions of effigies. A magnificent work that visually enriches any setting, adding distinction and historical narrative. Technical Data Technique on support: Pastel on paper Author: Signed Edmond Jewrin, Central European School Title of the work: “Female Portrait” Year: 1843 Good condition for its age and use.
