About the Item

On offer is a vivid portrait of an unknown woman. However, her styling tells us much about her social standing. The dark, high-collared pleated dress topped with a black velvet collar and the slight puffing at the shoulders, combined with her neat, coiled top-knot hairstyle, anchors this painting between 1895 and 1905. Further, the sitter’s stoic, three-quarter profile pose was traditional for respectable, upper-middle-class matriarchs of the period. Besides her face, a gold brooch stands out amid the dark background. It depicts three interlocking circles, a renowned historical design often referred to mathematically as Borromean Rings. In the context of early 20th-century jewelry, the three inseparable rings one each for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Christian iconography. Given the somber and modest nature of her dark attire, this is a strong indicator of her personal piety. This shape also symbolizes "strength in unity" and indivisibility, as removing one ring causes the entire structure to fall apart. It was a common mourning or sentimental piece representing eternal love and family commitment. The painting is signed "F. Bloos" in the upper right-hand corner. While "F. Bloos" appears on early 20th-century German postcards and landscape sketches, this artist is generally considered a minor or regional commercial illustrator from the German school active around the 1900s–1910s. The spectacular frame was almost certainly made in Germany or central Europe, matching the origin of the painter, and again underscoring the upper middle-class status of the sitter in whose home this likely hung. While the structural backbone of the frame is made of solid wood, all the repeating acanthus leaves, scrolls, and delicate floral flourishes on the front were cast in a mold and applied over the base. This was the standard manufacturing method for high-style European frames from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century. Signature/Maker’s mark: Upper right-hand corner (photo #7). Unframed dimensions: 19.25” high x 15.25” wide.
