Igoshev” Lower Left // INSCRIPTIONS - Old Soviet-Period Gallery Labels on Reverse // CONDITION - Good Painted in 1961, this portrait of a young reindeer herder belongs to Vladimir Igoshev’s celebrated body of work devoted to the Indigenous peoples of the Russian North. The sitter is portrayed in traditional northern clothing with a restrained palette and dense, vigorous brushwork, giving particular emphasis to the face and psychological presence of the young subject. Igoshev became especially associated with the Russian North through his sustained engagement with the Khanty, Mansi and other northern communities. Rather than treating these subjects as generalized ethnographic types, he repeatedly travelled to the northern territories and worked in direct contact with the people he portrayed. Faces, clothing and individual physiognomy consequently occupy a central place in this part of his oeuvre. Executed in the same year that Igoshev received the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR, the painting reflects the sober and human-centered tendencies associated with Soviet painting of the period and particularly with the Severe Style. Broad, materially worked brushstrokes and subdued earthy tones replace decorative detail, concentrating attention on the sitter’s character and physical presence. Igoshev was frequently described as a painter of the Russian North, a theme that became one of the defining aspects of his artistic identity. His works entered major Soviet museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum. The painting is signed “V. Igoshev” lower left and dated 1961. Old Soviet-period gallery labels preserved on the reverse provide additional evidence of the work’s early history. Good overall condition.
