About the Item

Yves Ganne (French, 1931 - 2019) Portrait of the artist’s daughter, circa 1965 Oil on canvas Studio stamp on the reverse 25.1/2 x 32 cm. (64.8 x 81 cm.) Provenance: From the estate of the artist Newly presented in a hand finished gilt composite frame with some lime effects and hand painted inner slip. This evocative Portrait of the Artist’s Daughter, painted circa 1965, is an intimate and psychologically engaging work by Yves Ganne (French, 1931–2019). Executed in oil on canvas and bearing the artist’s studio stamp on the reverse, the painting measures 64.8 x 81 cm and comes directly from the estate of the artist. The composition places the sitter close to the picture plane, looking directly outward, her presence heightened by a rich and immersive palette dominated by shades of blue. Leaning against a table with a vase of flowers, the portrait balances immediacy with quiet domestic refinement. Born in Angers, Anjou, in 1931, Yves Ganne studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes before continuing his training in Paris with Fernand Léger, an influence reflected in his confident structure and bold use of colour. He gained early critical recognition at the Prix de la Jeune Peinture exhibition in 1950 and was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Menton the same year. Ganne held his first Paris exhibition in 1954 at Drouant David, returning there again in 1957, and later exhibited in London at Tooth and Sons, as well as in numerous group exhibitions in France and internationally. Renowned for his vividly coloured landscapes, still lifes, and figurative works, Ganne’s paintings have been acquired by the French Government, the City of Paris, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. Works from the artist’s estate, particularly personal portraits such as this, offer a rare and compelling insight into his mature period and enduring artistic legacy.
